The Gillespie Dam is located in the lower Arlington valley in southwest Maricopa County. It was designed to meet the agricultural needs of the area and it feeds two canals with water from the Gila River. The dam has been breached and no longer holds a reservoir. Highway U.S. 80, an early cross country road passes through the valley on its way from Phoenix to Yuma and then on to Los Angeles. To move the highway across the river this truss bridge was built in 1927. The bridge has a total span of 1661.8 feet and a width of 18.7 feet. The width presents a challenge to modern vehicles. The bridge is still an important link to traffic moving through the area and is rated in fair condition.
