If most of us were asked if we know of a baseball player who had poetry written about them, we might be able to come up with "Casey at the Bat" But there is another one that we might want to add to our knowledge base:

Baseball’s Sad Lexicon
BY FRANKLIN PIERCE ADAMS
These are the saddest of possible words:
“Tinker to Evers to Chance.”
Trio of bear cubs, and fleeter than birds,
Tinker and Evers and Chance.
Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,
Making a Giant hit into a double—
Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:
“Tinker to Evers to Chance.”

OK, this may not be super intellectual poetry but apparently watching the double play combination of Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers and Frank Chance of the Chicago Cubs WAS poetry.

Joe Tinker was born in Kansas in 1880 where he began his baseball career as a shortstop in semi professional teams. He was raised up to the major leagues in 1902 as a member of the Chicago Cubs where he assisted the cubs in reaching four championships and two World Series. In 1916, Tinker was a player/manager for the Cubs.

After Tinker left the world of professional baseball, he joined the minor leagues as a part owner and manager for the Columbus Senators and then moved to Orlando, again as owner and manager, this time for the Orlando Tigers.

While in Florida, Tinker created a very successful real estate company which, unfortunately, was wiped out during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Tinker was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946.

Tinker's personal life included three marriages and four children. His health deteriorated in his later years as he developed diabetes which caused him to endure an amputation of his left leg above the knee. He died on his 68th birthday and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando.
Description:
Joe Tinker was a shortstop for the Chicago Cubs and eventually owned an managed the Orlando Tigers minor league baseball team. He was a successful real estate businessman although he lost his real estate business during the Great Depression. Tinker is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
