King Hammurabi was the sixth king of the First Babylonian Dynasty, reigning from 1792 BC to 1750 BC. He is best known for having issued the Code of Hammurabi, which he claimed to have received from Shamash, the Babylonian god of justice.

The Code of Hammurabi is one of the oldest preserved forms of human law. The stele with the code was erected around 1772 BC in the Babylonian town of Sippar. Today, it is on display in the Louvre in Paris.

An exact replica stands in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.

Main belt asteroid 7207 Hammurabi was discovered on September 24, 1960 at the Palomar observatory in California.
