For several years now, Bpost has been creating sheets dedicated to Belgian city centres in the context of the Promotion of Philately. In 2018 the series will focus on the main monuments erected on the Namur squares

The only work of this style in Belgium, Namur Cathedral is typical of the mid-18th century, mixing the memory of the Baroque and Rococo with Classicism.
History
Saint-Aubain Cathedral was founded in 1047 by the Earl of Namur, Albert II. Originally collegiate, it became a cathedral in 1559 when Philip II was crowned King of Spain and Namur became a bishopric. The building was then redesigned by M.-G. Pisoni and J.-B. Chermanne between 1751 and 1767. Threatened by destruction during the French Revolution, the cathedral was saved and transformed into a temple of the Law.
The building, of brick and limestone, is composed of three naves of three bays, a transept slightly projecting but rather broad and a choir, two bays, annexed by low chapels with flat chevets. The façade, with its typical 18th century repertoire, is entirely built in small granite according to a late baroque repertoire tempered by neo-classicism.
The classical interior is decorated with stucco, engaged columns, monumental pilasters, Corinthian capitals and cherubs. The nave is covered by a vault decorated with golden stars and plant motifs, the sides are surmounted by small stucco domes and the cross is topped by a vast dome.
