The Storm has its own Wikipedia page, where it says the storm killed more than 250 people, destroyed 19 ships, and stranded 19 others. The financial loss in vessels alone was nearly US $5 million (or about $126,751,000 in today's dollars).

Brilliantly, the designers of the memorial used stone for the base that was recovered from another local disaster. The stone was salvaged 1878 Victoria Street United Church in Goderich which was destroyed in the 2011 tornado.
