The Old Courthouse was converted into the Cayman Islands National Museum after the new courthouse was constructed near Heroes Square. This is the Cayman Islands oldest surviving public building. It housed the first Post Office, the Commissioner's Offices, and the Courthouse and a jail. It also served as a schoolroom, public library, a savings bank, a church hall, and a dance hall.
The architecture is that of a typical two story Cayman Island building. It has a red roof, a porch on both floors and is fronted by a white picket fence. The exterior flight of stairs led to the court room on the second floor.
Today, the building is the home of the Cayman Islands National Museum which was established in 1979. It's mission is to collect, preserve, interpret and exhibit the natural, cultural and art history of the Cayman Islands.
The stamp was issued in 1982 as part of a set of four stamps commemorating the 150th anniversary of representative government in the Cayman Islands.
