L’église Saint-Jean l’Evangéliste de Triaize date de la fin du XIIe siècle. Construite selon le plan des églises romanes de la région, cet édifice est composé d’une nef coupée d’un transept. L’abside semi-circulaire, construite vers 1771, remplace le chœur carré d’origine.
La nef, le transept et le chœur sont à l’origine couverts d’une voûte en pierres, comme l’attestent la voûte du croisillon sud et l’absidiole des fonts baptismaux, seule partie ayant survécu au saccage de l’église par les huguenots de La Rochelle en 1622. Le croisillon nord du transept sera reconstruit seulement en 1840.
C’est encore à cette époque que l’on supprime la voûte en pierre du clocher pour y construire celle que vous voyez aujourd’hui.
En 1966, l’église connaît une nouvelle restauration.
Le clocher actuel a été érigé vers 1770 probablement par un compagnon du tour de France qui l’a construit une première fois au sol, puis démonté et remonté. C’est une œuvre remarquable, unique en France, par la conception de la charpente à triple renflement.

The church of St. John the Evangelist Triaize dates from the late twelfth century. Built according to the plan of the Romanesque churches of the region, this building is composed of a nave cut off from a transept. The semicircular apse, built around 1771, replaces the original square choir.
The nave, the transept and the choir are originally covered with a stone vault, as evidenced by the vault of the southern cross and the abbey of the baptismal font, the only surviving part of the sacking of the church by the Huguenots of La Rochelle in 1622. The north transept will be rebuilt only in 1840.
It is still at this time that one removes the stone vault of the steeple to build the one that you see today.
In 1966, the church is experiencing a new restoration.
The current bell tower was erected around 1770 probably by a companion of the Tour de France who built it a first time on the ground, then dismounted and reassembled. It is a remarkable work, unique in France, by the design of the frame with triple bulge.
