From 1903 to 1911 the farming community of Tempe relied on two volunteer fire companies, each of which had 600' of hose and could access one of the 48 hydrants in town. By the end of that period it became clear that the town's fire fighting needs were often beyond the range of those hydrants. In 1911 the problem was solved with the purchase of this Anderson Chemical Fire Engine. Not dependent upon a water supply, this engine could suppress fires with a chemical spray. The price was $730. Information gathered from museum signage.
