This building was the former Berwyn School, constructed by the WPA in 1937-38. The name of the town was changed to Gene Autry, Oklahoma in 1941. Today, the building houses the post office and the Gene Autry Oklahoma Museum. As you enter the museum on the wall to the right is this bronze plaque honoring William (Bill) James from the old Berwyn school days.
Bill James was born on Christmas Day of 1909, and passed away on July 9, 1976. He is buried in O M Cemetery in Hollis, Oklahoma.
The plaque reads:
