The town of Cloud Chief was once known as Tacola when it was established in 1892. Under the name Cloud Chief, the town became the county seat of H County in Oklahoma Territory. But in 1900 when Washita County was established, the county seat was moved to Cordell, and Cloud Chief began its slow demise. The school closed in 1960, and there is no post office. The town is officially a ghost town with only a few families remaining. No exact population records are kept. The firehouse is located on County Road 1216, the main east-west street through town. Coordinates for the turn off to the town are N35 15.162 W98 51.139

But, even a few families need fire and emergency services, so among the ruins of the town, is a firehouse - a metal building with four overhead vehicle doors. A nearby sign shows that the department was established in 2008. There is no 911 service, but a local emergency number is posted: 580-832-3131. The fire department offices are located in Cordell, approximately 10 miles to the northwest at 315 W. 6th Street. A photo on Cloud Chief's Facebook page shows a group of about 14 fire fighters, and we assume that the Cordell Fire Department manpower is used in the Cloud Chief operations.
