On Gasparilla Island is the Rear Range Light as it is know by the locals. After the federal government decommissioned the lighthouse as an aid to navigation the Barrier Island Park Society (BIPS) obtained the ownership of the lighthouse and the surrounding 7.4 acres of dune area.

BIPS has successfully restored the lighthouse and created a hiking trail in the surrounding property. This trail takes you through the dune area and provides access to the beach.

Parking is available at the Gasparilla Island State Park parking lot adjacent to the lighthouse. A $3.00 fee is charged for parking and can be used all day at the other parking areas of the state park.

From the parking lot is a well paved path to the lighthouse that is wheelchair friendly. This paved path takes you to the lighthouse and to a butterfly garden with native landscaping, benches, a picnic table and water fountain are available at the base of the lighthouse.

The trail goes further into the dune area, but is no longer handicap accessible. Hiking this portion of the trail is easy but caution needs to be taken concerning vegetative roots at ground level creating a number of trip hazards.
Trail allowances or restrictions:
This is a hiking trail only. No golf carts, bicycles, motorized bikes, alcoholic beverages, smoking, or pets are allowed. Restrooms are available at the state park parking lot.
