Main Belt asteroid 5820 Babelsberg was discovered on October 23, 1989 by German astronomer Freimut Börngen and named after the Babelsberg Observatory.

Babelsberg Observatory was an astronomical observatory founded in 1913. At the end of its active observations, it had the second largest archive of astronomical photographic plates as a result of over 60 years of photographic sky survey.

It is now headquarters of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics.
