In 1913, the astronomical observatory of the Prussian Academy of Sciences, which had been in Berlin since 1711, was moved to Babelsberg, which was back then a Berlin burrow, but is now part of the city of Potsdam.

On August 11, 2013, the Babelsberg Observatory celebrated its 100 birthday and the German minister of science came to congratulate.

The Märkische Allgmeine Zeitung, the leading newspaper in the state wrote about it. You can see a copy of the original, German article in the gallery; here is our translation.

Johanna Wanka joins the party

Last Saturday, the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics celebrated the 100th anniversary of its observatory. In 1913, the Berlin Observatory was moved to Babelsberg. German Minister of Science Johanna Wanka joined the celebration.

The observatory's staff took her on a voyage through time, presenting the institute's most valuable artifacts, among them a a 65 cm refractor — the first big astronomical instrument manufactured by the famous enterprise of Carl Zeiss Jena and original sketches of constellations done by Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) and kept in shelves manufactured by the great Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841).
