The first mention dates back to 1348, when a stronghold was situated on the site of the present chateau. Over time this fortress underwent several reconstructions in a Renaissance chateau.

Zámek je tvoren obdélnou dvoupatrovou budovou s renesancním vstupním portálem. Vznikl prestavbou vodního hradu v 16. století ve stylu saské renesance. Dnešní podobu ale získal po roce 1610. Jako panské sídlo nebyl využíván.
V letech 1842-1922 prostory zámku využíval Josef Münzberg jako továrnu na výrobu vlnených látek.
Teprve v letech 1928-30 nechal kníže František Antonín Thun-Hohestein zámek upravit na moderní rodinné sídlo. Kolem budovy založil romantický park s jezírkem a glorietem.
Po skoncení 2. svetové války byl objekt zestátnen a do jeho prostor byl umísten detský domov, posléze zemedelské ucilište.
V soucasnosti se v zámku nachází expozice o historii mesta a okolí.
