On the hill above the town Ceská Kamenice (formerly Kamenice) at about 530 m altitude there is the rest of the castle Castle´hill, formerly called Kamenice. From the wooden tower you can see the ruins of the fortification and see why we say the town Ceská Kamenice is in the palm of the hand. You can also have a wonderful view of the Lužické mountains, Ceské stredohorí and Czech-Saxon Switzerland. We are not sure when the castle was originally built but according to the estimations it was some time at the beginning of the 15th century. The owners of the castle, the Vartemberks, didn´t have good relations with Lužicané and so they often fought with each other. The castle was conquered and burnt out several times and the Vartemberks were forced to sell the castle because of financial difficulties. The ownership of the castle changed hands several times till the 30 years war when Baner'S swedish crew moving from Žitava to Ceská Lípa and Decín conquered the castle in 1639. The castle was burnt out and destroyed and it stayed unchanged till recently. At the end of the 19th century local civic clubs decided to open the castle to the public. During the 1930s there was a holiday restaurant and a knights hall decorated with historical relics and coats of arms. After World War 2 Castle hill began to waste away till 1995 when the walls were stabilized and a new wooden tower was built.

Hrad pravdepodobne založil v letech 1427–1433 Zikmund Decínský z Vartenberka poté, co od Jindricha Berky z Dubé koupil panství hradu Falkenštejn. Nový hrad nad Kamenicí mel nahradit hrad Fredevald, který zustal v majetku Jitky z Hazmburka, manželky Jindricha Berky. První písemná zmínka o hradu pochází až z roku 1476. Roku 1440 podniklo lužické Šestimestí výpravu do okolí hradu, pri které vypálilo Kamenici, ale není jisté, zda se jednalo o mestecko nebo o hrad.[4] Roku 1515 koupili panství páni ze Salhausenu. Další záznamy dosvedcují, že v roce 1535 je Kamenice znovu pánu z Vartenberka, ale to byl již hrad neobývaný. Strhla se o nej potycka v roce 1639 za tricetileté války a Švédi jej znovu vypálili a poborili.

V roce 1880 se clenové Okrašlovacího spolku pustili do vycistení od náletu a oprav zdiva. Pak byla budova hradního paláce upravena jako turistická chata, byla zde postavena i šestnáct metru vysoká rozhledna s pekným výhledem na Ceskou Kamenici. V roce 1910 spolek dokázal zprístupnit rytírský sál.

Po roce 1940 zacal objekt vcetne rozhledny chátrat, deset let poté zanikla restaurace, drevená vež se rozpadávala. V roce 1995 se zásluhou v Ceské Kamenici nove zrízené nadace pro obnovu Zámeckého vrchu podarilo zahájit obnovu. Z hradu se zachoval hradní palác a cást kamenných hradeb. Ruiny byly opet vycisteny, zdi zpevneny a v roce 1998 byla dokoncena stavba nové rozhledny.
