The town hall:
The first plans for the town hall were drawn up by the director of local roads and public works assistant Pedro Maffiotte (1864), being corrected in 1875 by the architect José A. López Echegarreta.
López Echegarreta designed a rectangular structure that is arranged around a central courtyard on two floors and way facades. The main part is characterized by the existence of five semicircular arches on each floor, between the blind bodies. The openings are delimited by pilasters packed in hexagons on the inside. The building ends in a large balustrade with plant decorations at the ends and a billboard that determines the completion of the works. The slightly recessed upper body was installed around the 1930s.

The city:
Arucas is a municipality in the northern part of the island of Gran Canaria with a population of 37.367 and an area of 33.01 km2.

The name Arucas probably derives from the prehispanic name Arehucas or Arehuc. Even before the conquest of the Canary Islands by the Spanish, the Arucas was a centre of old Canarian life. During the conquests in 1478, the town was largely destroyed. 1481 A.D. the old Canarian king Doramas was killed at the battle of Arucas in a duel against the Spanish commander Pedro de Vera. Soon after, the settlement was reestablished with mainly Spanish settlers.
Decisive impulses for the development were initially the income from the production and marketing of the red dye of the cochineal scale insect. Sugar cane was cultivated on a large scale until around 1920. With the rise of the Caribbean sugar cane plantations, the cultivation of bananas became more and more important. This was one of the most important local sources of income until the 1970s. In the meantime, the banana cultivation area has shrunk by more than half. Today, more vegetables, fruit and flowers are grown.
