"IRON COUNTY, Mo. • A St. Louis-area man drowned Tuesday at a state park in southeast Missouri after getting in the water to help save someone, police said.
The Missouri Highway Patrol identified the man as Rashad Moungo, 24. Public records show he lived in Kinloch.
The patrol was called to Elephant Rocks State Park shortly after 4 p.m. for a report of a man who entered a body of water to help someone else and never resurfaced, Trooper Clark Parrott said. The state park is about 70 miles south of St. Louis.
Troopers with the patrol's marine division responded and recovered Moungo's body from the water, Parrott said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Parrott did not have more details Tuesday night. He did not know where exactly in the state park Moungo drowned, whom Moungo was with at the time or how much time had passed since Moungo entered the water and his body was recovered. The investigation is ongoing.
Iron County Sheriff Rodger Medly told the Park Hills Daily Journal that the man drowned in a small lake near Missouri Highway 21 and that the man was fully clothed when his body was recovered about 5:20 p.m. An autopsy in was scheduled for Thursday in Farmington.
