The "inhabitants" of this church have many stories to tell us.
It is necessary to deviate from the main axis Poitiers-Saintes to find the church (classified historic monument in 1988) of this locality which was, in the Middle Ages, a land of passage and reception. Indeed the town is located on the paths of Compostela. There are still two carved shells on the chimney of the town hall. The church possessed a chaplaincy of St. James and St. Catherine, which welcomed sick, poor and pilgrims. The church is dedicated to Saint-Léger, we find the first traces when it was given to the Abbey of Saint-Jean-d'Angely in 1088. It was often reworked over time but with a certain harmony . Once again in Mellois, one can admire the paw of François the Duke said "Tuscany", at the level of the choir, which it restores in 1682.
On the facade you can go back in time, from the triangular pediment with its two bells baptized in 1901, through its 16th century portal to its Romanesque bay, witness of the first building.
The portal is broken arch and deep ribs intersect at the top. In contrast, at the choir level, there is a whole "people" on the modillions: an acrobat admires his flexibility, a harpist plays a little air, a man seems well taken by his long beard and another door the roof at arm's length. Some are less friendly: a dog devours a man, another very hard to swallow his own and a third to finish his meal and eats the remains.
Inside, the nave is bare, without column, and capped. Its floor is paved with tombstones, some of which at the entrance of the choir are emblazoned. The choir opens on a beautiful triumphal arch which rests on two Romanesque columns. Their capitals are interesting, on the right flowers and foliage intertwine, on the left four men advance towards a large palm that seems to come from a distant country.
We leave the church Saint-Léger with lots of stories to tell, as the output of a show, even if its actors are made of stones.

Les « habitants » de cette église ont bien des histoires à nous raconter.
Il faut s'écarter de l'axe principal Poitiers-Saintes pour trouver l'église (classée monument historique en 1988) de cette localité qui fut, au Moyen Âge, une terre de passage et d'accueil. En effet la commune se situe sur les chemins de Compostelle. On trouve encore sur la cheminée de la mairie deux coquilles sculptées. L'église possédait une aumônerie Saint-Jacques et Sainte-Catherine qui accueillait malades, pauvres et pèlerins. L'église est dédiée à Saint-Léger, on en trouve les premières traces lorsqu'elle a été donnée à l'Abbaye de Saint-Jean-d'Angely en 1088. Elle fut souvent remaniée au fil du temps mais avec une certaine harmonie. Encore une fois en Mellois, on peut admirer la patte de François le Duc dit « Toscane », au niveau du chœur, qu'il restaure en 1682.
Sur la façade on peut remonter le temps, du fronton triangulaire avec ses deux cloches baptisées en 1901, en passant par son portail du XVIe siècle jusqu'à sa baie romane, témoin du premier édifice.
Le portail est en arc brisé et de profondes nervures s'entrecroisent à son sommet. A l'opposé, au niveau du chœur, on trouve tout un « peuple » sur les modillons : un acrobate nous fait admirer sa souplesse, un harpiste nous joue un petit air, un homme semble bien emprunté par sa longue barbe et un autre porte la toiture à bout de bras. Certains sont moins sympathiques : un chien dévore un homme, un autre à bien du mal à avaler le sien et un troisième à fini son repas et en ronge les restes.
A l' intérieur, la nef est dépouillée, sans colonne, et plafonnée. Son sol est dallé de pierres tombales dont certaines à l'entrée du chœur sont armoriées. Le chœur s'ouvre sur un bel arc triomphal qui repose sur deux colonnes romanes. Leurs chapiteaux sont intéressants, à droite fleurs et feuillages s'entrelacent, à gauche quatre hommes s'avancent vers une grande palme qui semblent provenir d'un lointain pays.
On repart de l'église Saint-Léger avec plein d'histoires à raconter, comme à la sortie d'un spectacle, même si ses acteurs sont fait de pierres.
