Playa Kanoa is the only beach that is located on the rugged Northern side of the island of Curacao. While definitely not a "relaxing" beach-lover destination, it is quite famous among surfers for its strong winds, huge waves and punishing swells.
Swimming in this part of the coast of Curacao can be quite thrilling, if not dangerous. There is very little sand to speak of save for two small protected patches at the eastern end of the beach zone -- the rest is covered by sheer knife-sharp limestone which is constantly pummeled by oncoming 4-6 ft waves. Playa Kanoa is, however, the perfect place to surf on the island as surfers can get quite easily into the sea and start their adventure. The beach also includes a boat dock where dive trips into the Northern dropoffs can be arranged for thrill seekers looking for something other than the mild, relaxing reefs found on the island's Southern coast.
Playa Kanoa is free and open at all times, however its facilities are limited: there is a restaurant open for lunch and drinks, nearby toilets, and a surfboard rental facility next to the beach.
