With its wide sky, Dartmoor is instantly recognisable as you first look at this beautiful mural. Then as your eye moves down you see the iconic sheep and the mural becomes three dimensional as the small, artistic garden together with a Dartmoor gate seems to merge into the scene.
This article from the Okehampton Times describes the opening of this mural:
'A CREATIVE art project in Okehampton will have its official opening this Saturday.
The Gateway Garden on the corner of East Street and Crediton Road depicts the hills of Dartmoor with a giant mural and a ’gateway to the moors’.
Artist Jim Hamer and his daughter Beth have worked alongside the community, volunteers, local and national organisations to bring a hint of the environment and heritage that surrounds the town.
There will be a barbecue, smoothies made using electricity generated with a bicycle, and tea and cake.
Cllr Christine Marsh, who supports the project, said: ’It is looking absolutely stunning. Beth and Jim have worked so hard on this, and it is great to see something positive for the town. The 3D effect created with the gate and the mural is stunning, so striking and really effective.’
Supported by Growing Our Future, Okehampton College, Okehampton United Charity, the county council, Groundwork UK, ITV Fixers and Dulux paint, the mural and seating area will be opened on Saturday, June 15 from 3pm to 5pm, to coincide with the ride through of the Deloitte Ride Across Britain cycle challenge.'
