This fort was crucial to the defense of Goa, specially the mouth of the river Mandovi and the sea access to the capital, Panjim.
The original structure, built over an old Indian defensive structure, was smaller than the fort which now stands on the location. Actually, since its construction it was enlarged several times and rebuilt in 1707.
It saw action in 1739 when the Marathas attacked Goa, and it resisted to the offensive.
After the invasion of 1961 it was used by the Indians as a prison but when they shutdown the prison in 1993 the fort became neglected. It was finally renovated by the Government of Goa and transformed in a fine museum. This happened in 2008, with funds provided by an UK Trust.
