In Greek mythology, Hermes was the messenger of the gods, a son of Zeus and the Pleiad Maia. He was the god of trade, heraldry, merchants, commerce, roads, thieves, trickery, sports, travelers. Hermes was one of the Olympians - the eleven gods that resided on Mount Olympus.
German sculptor Rudolph_Schadow made this bronze statue for the Gardens of Sanssouci in the Prussian capital Potsdam.
In 1829, when royal gardener Hermann Sello designed the gardens of Charlottenhof Palace, he placed the statue at the stairway to a Greek-styled pergola, next to a statue of Greek hero Paris. |
