A marker placed by the City of La Porte tells:
La Porte Cemetery
The La Porte Cemetery is the second cemetery built in the City of La Porte. This community cemetery was established in 1907, although there are records of burials on the cemetery prior to its official designation by Harris County.
The cemetery comprises block 1152 and the east half of block 1151 of La Porte. It was originally cared for by a group volunteers that included Dr. Juliet Marchant, the towns first woman physician. Other original community members include Hattie Brick, Rosa A. Collins, Anne White, and Imogene Jarvis. In the cemetery's early days, the City Fathers constructed a barbed wire fence around the graveyard to keep the cattle out, with a stile for people to walk over. A fourth of the block-and-a-half site was reserved for Catholic burials, through the efforts of brothers James and Thomas Sullivan.
In 1939 a group of concerned citizens formed an organization called the La Porte Cemetery Association. The association worked hard to keep the cemetery from falling into disrepair, and solicited donations from families of the deceased to help with upkeep costs. The Association was formalized in 1989.
