The obituary of Walter Gier in the Morning Call newspaper on November 17, 1997, provides all of the details for this man's love of music.
"Walter J. Gier, 90, of 3411 Chestnut St., Laureldale, Berks County, died Saturday, Nov. 15, in St. Joseph Medical Center, Reading. He was the husband of Lillian L. (Heinly) Gier. They were married for 33 years last December.

He was a self-employed music instructor in Reading for 64 years before retiring in May. He had also been a special adviser in brass at Mansfield State College and Pennsylvania State University.

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late John A. and Mayme L. (Fisher) Gier.

A member of the Ringgold Band, Laureldale, for 50 years, he was its conductor for 21 years and a past prinicpal trumpet soloist, vice president and assistant conductor.

He was a member of Rosedale United Church of Christ, Laureldale, and its former choir director and Bell Tower trumpet player.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member and soloist in the Army Band, 1942-46. During that time, he was requested by President Truman to play ruffles & flourishes for a special occasion in the White House.

Gier was a life member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 135-211, Reading, and a member of the American Band Masters Association and International Trumpet Guild.

He was a member of American Legion Post 0622, Laureldale, and the Pike Sportsman Club. He was a 70-year-member of the Pikeville American Automobile Association.

Survivors: Wife; stepson, Russell W. Becker Jr. of Reading; stepdaughter, Barbara A., wife of George Beck of Temple, five step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.
Services: Private. Arrangements, Cremation Services for Pennsylvania, Macungie.
Contributions: Ringgold Band, Laureldale.

His tombstone states:
As you marvel at his legacy as a teacher, musician and friend, note his words: "This is why God put me here."
With his calling thus fulfilled, there resounds on earth and surely in heaven: "Thank you, Mr. Gier!"
