Pierre Dugua de Mons
v. 1560-1628

Pierre Dugua of Mons (Translated from the above noted text)
v. 1560-1628

Born in Royan, Saintonge, Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons,
is an important but little known actor of the French epic in America.

Appointed lieutenant-general of New France in 1603, the Sieur de Mons was commissioned by Henry IV to found a permanent colony in North America in exchange for the exclusive privilege of the fur trade.

After two unsuccessful attempts in Acadia in 1604 and 1605, Mons turned to the St. Lawrence Valley. In 1608, he gave Samuel de Champlain the mandate to found Quebec and provided him with all the powers and material and financial support necessary to succeed in this endeavor.

On July 3, 1608, Champlain arrived in Quebec City, accompanied by twenty-seven companions, and erected his dwelling.

Pierre Dugua de Mons will have played a leading role in the founding of the first permanent French establishment in North America.
