Elzéar Bédard
(1799-1849)

Text of the plaque translated from the above noted text:
Elzéar Bédard
(1799-1849)

In this house, built in 1783, lived from 1830 to 1836 Elzéar Bédard, lawyer judge, city councilor, first mayor of the City of Quebec and member of Lower Canada.

On May 1, 1833, Elzéar Bédard became the first mayor of the City of Quebec. He held this position until March 1834. It was under his leadership that the foundations of the municipal corporation of Quebec were built.

Until February 1836, he continued his parliamentary activities, begun in 1832, as deputy of Montmorency County in the House of Assembly of Lower Canada. He died on August 11, 1849, in Montreal, while a judge of the Court of King's Bench.

The house belonged successively to Pierre and Elzéar Bédard, father and son. The first acquired it in 1800. While it has only one stone floor, it actually raises a second. Burned in 1811, the house is restored the following year. In 1830, Elzéar Bédard elevates the building with one floor and gives it its current appearance. This house was classified as a historic monument on September 8, 1967 by the Government of Quebec.
