Living New Deal

"It was built in or near an abandoned rock quarry through the WPA. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a much loved place for many San Antonians who grew up here.

NRHP Nomination Form

" Built of concrete and faced with local limestone, the rustic Art Moderne facility is sited in an old limestone quarry pit just west of Brackenridge Park. The stadium was designed to integrate with the topography of the quarry, giving it a very low profile for such a large structure. The complex is partially perched atop a rise, offering panoramic views of downtown San Antonio to the south and Fort Sam Houston to the east. The stadium is the largest high school football stadium in Texas, seating 23,000 spectators, and measures approximately 690 feet in length and 460 feet in width.

The primary access for stadium visitors was designed to be from the west, as indicated by the wide concrete promenade leading from Stadium Drive to the stadium entrance. This walk is delineated by raised limestone planting beds on both sides, each with two rows of nine palm trees leading to the stadium entrance. This walk and the west stadium entry (primary entry) are located on the highest elevation of the site, thus offering the dramatic views to the south. There are four detached limestone ticket booths (4 feet x 10 feet) integrated into the planter walls approaching the entry."
