The sign is facing the traffic heading east to Penrith and Sydney. Lawson is located between Hazelbrook (east) and Bullaburra (west). The town has had a few name changes over the years settlement. The explorers called it 24 Mile Hollow, later being changed to Christmas Swamp for a few years. It was then called 'Blue Mountain'; which became rather confusing, expecially having the railway station called that, as the whole rising plateau was already known as that. It was then called Lawson, after one of the three explorers of 1813, who mapped a route to the western plains.

The is another Elevation sign to accessed when heading east, but the traffic needs to be rather light, as there is a narrower cycle lane here to pull over into.
