The town of Hinton has about 3300 residents and sits in a rather vulnerable part of Tornado Alley. Looking online at tornado statistics, we found that Hinton has approximately 3 tornadoes per year, and 214 have occurred within a 30 mile radius of the town. The most significant one occurred on May 24, 2011 within 5 miles of town, when 9 people died and 181 were injured.

Outdoor warning devices are a vital part of a town's alert system in Oklahoma. This siren is a stationary unit and has two rows of 8 horns each, covering a 360 degree circle. The siren is located on a horizontal beam under the municipal water tank, in the center of town.
