By Their Children
"The Wall Family Papers is composed of letters, photographs, published books and histories, military service records, Air Force flight records, a post-WWII photograph album, and miscellaneous materials documenting the military service of George R. Wall, Walter A. Wall, and William L. Wall—three brothers from Chatham County, North Carolina, who all served during World War II. George R. Wall served as a medical doctor in the U.S. Army. Walter A. Wall served in the U.S. Army Air Corp, where he flew with the 351st Bomb Group, 511st Squadron, 8th Air Force. William L. Wall served in the U.S. Army with the 36th Field Artillery Battalion.
"The collection contains the WWII service records of George and Walter Wall. There are also flight records and various prisoner-of-war records for Walter Wall, documenting his time held at Stalag Luft III by the Germans from August 1944 to May 1945. Wall was held in the same German prison featured in the 1950 book and 1963 film The Great Escape. The collection also contains Walter Wall’s personal copy with annotated notes of The Great Escape. Additionally, there are letters sent from William Wall while he was overseas from 1942 to August 1945. The collection also features various photographs of all three Wall brothers, and of George R. Wall’s father-in-law Dr. Bob Harris during his World War I service." ~ Military Collections - State Archives of North Carolina
