The statue of a giant horse located in the north corner of Giardino di Poggiofanti (Poggiofanti gardens)in Montepulciano was placed here as a part of exhibition entitled “Leonardo da Vinci: Visions” which was held in the city from 14 May – 15 October 2017. The statue was left here after the exhibition. It is full-size reconstruction of the Equestrian Monument in memory of Francesco Sforza. This reconstruction of the giant horse, over seven metres tall, is characterised by faithfulness to Leonardo’s drawings and to the casting process invented by him. Made of composite materials and featuring a steel structure, it is 7.8 m tall and has a total extension of about 10 x 4 meters, with a total weight of 20,000 kg (20 tons). The statue known as Leonardo's Horse (also known as Gran Cavallo) was made in a many "copies" around the world.
The sculpture that was commissioned of Leonardo da Vinci in 1482 by Duke of Milan Ludovico il Moro, but it was never not completed. It was intended to be the largest equestrian statue in the world, a monument to the duke's father Francesco. Leonardo did extensive preparatory work for it, but produced only a clay model, which was destroyed by French soldiers when they invaded Milan in 1499, interrupting the project. About five centuries later, Leonardo's surviving design materials were used as the basis for sculptures intended to bring the project to fruition.
