description/mission statement:
Nautical flag poles represent sailing vessels of maritime history. They are used to fly multiple flags. They are permanently mounted in stable ground and many times have memorials or monuments nearby. They can be single masted or double masted. These poles are made with a yardarm and may also have a gaff. The yardarm is a pole crossing perpendicular to the flag pole, and represents the spar used to spread the square sail. The gaff is a spar sticking out from the main pole and is angled higher than the yardarm. It represents the support of the head of the quadrilateral fore and aft sail. Traditionally, the flag taking the position of honor (the host country) is flown from the gaff and not the top of the flag pole; however, numerous places maintaining these flag poles may not follow this tradition.
