The aim of the group is to promote WM category "wayside shrines".
A wayside shrines are type of small sacred monuments, usually in some sort of column or pillar with small shelter, placed by a road or pathway, sometimes at a crossroads, but often in the middle of an empty stretch of country road, or at the top of a hill. They symbolize the column at which Christ was scourged, therefore, they are often decorated with symbols associated with Christ's suffering as reprimand, crown of thorns nails and a hammer, pliers, spear, etc. They have been a feature of many cultures, especially European Catholic areas. This type of monument has many names in local languages – e.g. Bildstock, Marterl, Helgenstöckli, Schöpflöffel or Wegstock in German, Boží muka in Czech, Božia muka in Slovak, Koplytstulpis in Lithuanian language. They were built over a long period from the 14. to 20. century. In the 14. to 17. century, were mostly in the form of a sandstone, marble or granite pillar with lantern and a cross on. From the late Baroque period till present, more common type is brick or stone build structure with roof on triple-or square floor plan. However, in some areas (part of Germany, Lithuania) historic and even modern shrines were also made of wood.

<u><b>The purpose of this WM category is not to document all different types of shrines, but more specifically the small wayside shrines in the shape of a stone or wooden column or brick pillar.</b></u>
<u><b>A wayside shrines are not:</b></u>
• Outdoor altars – the purpose of wayside shrines is to remind passers-by the suffering of Christ, not to provide space for worship. They are typically at locations not suitable for religious service and not designed to accommodate clergy.
• Christian crosses
• Statues as Pietas
• Stations of the Cross
• Wayside or village chapels
