Urban Legends and Superstitions
Managed By: Icon Here I Triple-Dog Dare You
Description:
Play by visiting the location of an Urban Legend or Superstition and possibly testing it. This will involve visiting a place and possibly performing an action at that place.
Expanded Description:
An Urban Legend is a type of legend told as a factual incident, usually with the storyteller knowing someone who knows someone that the legend happened to. A Superstition is an irrational belief arising from ignorance and fear; many of these have been present in cultures for hundreds of years.

Some Urban Legends and Superstitions are based on a location only and some can only be fully experienced by performing an action at the location.

Urban Legends and Superstitions can vary geographically or from culture to culture. Some Urban Legends and Superstitions are only locally known. Both global and local are in play here.

Email hoaxes, Rumors and 'Net lore, while sometimes entertaining, are not included in this category.

Crybaby Bridge is an example of an Urban Legend that is based on a location.

The Steam Tunnel Incident and The Submarine are more examples of Urban Legends that are based on a location.

King Tut's Tomb Curse is an example of a Superstition that is based on a location.

Avoidance of the number 4 and Avoidance of the number 13 are more examples of Superstitions that are based on a location.

Sometimes Superstitions are difficult to discern from Urban Legends, so both are in play.

All submissions must have a dedicated location that is specifically linked to the Urban Legend that is being posted. The Urban Legend or Superstition must not be one that can be found or tested randomly.

No waymarks that depict or depend on illegal or dangerous activity will be approved into this category. There are laws that already govern against such dangerous acts as trespassing or unsafe driving. Many Urban Legends have safe versions that can be posted and Officers will help Waymarkers locate these, if they are available, so that a safe proper waymark can be played into the category. Be Safe! This section will repeat in the posting requirements below.
Instructions for Posting a Urban Legends and Superstitions Waymark:
All submissions must have a dedicated location that is specifically linked to the Urban Legend that is being posted. The Urban Legend or Superstition must not be one that can be found or tested randomly.

Coordinates must be marked with a handheld GPS receiver.

A photo of the site must be included. If the waymark includes an action that must be done at the location, include a photo that is representative or demonstrative of that action. If there is a tablet or plaque memorializing the Urban Legend, include a photograph of it.

Do your best to keep your GPSr out of the photos.

Fill in the Long Description with the story of the Urban Legend or Superstition. Tell the story as if you’re telling it to an audience that has never heard it before.

Completing the applicable Variables is a requirement. If information is unavailable or the Variable is inapplicable, then it does not need to be completed.

As stated above:
No waymarks that depict or depend on illegal or dangerous activity will be approved into this category. There are laws that already govern against such dangerous acts as trespassing or unsafe driving. Many Urban Legends have safe versions that can be posted and Officers will help Waymarkers locate these, if they are available, so that a safe proper waymark can be played into the category. Be Safe!

Please try not to use any special characters in your waymark names, just letters, numbers, commas, apostrophes, and dashes. This makes it easier to load waypoints into software.
Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Visit the location. If an action is required, test the action. Post a story and photograph of what happened. Do your best to keep your GPSr out of the photos.
