Description:
Locations with plaques describing the FIRST occurrence of a Person/Group or Place/Location or Thing/Event.
Expanded Description:

This category is dedicated to the FIRST recorded occurrence as defined below:

  • First Person or Group - as in "First Woman Astronaut" or "First NFL Team to win the Superbowl"
  • First Place or Location - as in "First Telephone Exchange in the British Empire" or "First Gold Mine in the Yukon"
  • First Item or Event - as in "First Diesel Locomotive" or "First Hanging in the USA"

Instructions for Posting a First of its Kind Waymark:

Please provide coordinates that you took when visiting the site, as well as an image taken at the site. The coordinates must match the actual location of the FIRST. Providing an image of the FIRST makes for a more interesting listing, however if only a plaque exists it is still acceptable.

There must be a plaque or similar signage at the site that confirms the FIRST, and an image of the plaque should also be supplied with listing submission. All plaques MUST have the word "FIRST" or "1st" (suitable synonyms like "Oldest" or "Original" are acceptable) in the text on them to qualify, as related to the FIRST. Plaques may be metal, carved stone, wooden or similar physical material. However, brochures and fliers, or images taken from online sources are NOT sufficient. Visitors must be able to learn about the FIRST by reading a plaque at the listed coordinates by being able to walk up to it and read it for themselves to learn that the location is the "FIRST of its kind".

The word "OLDEST" can only be a substitute for the word "FIRST". "The OLDEST Masonic Lodge" is acceptable but not as in "The OLDEST man to swim the English Channel".

Naming your Waymark Listing: You may name your Waymark Listing anything you like within reason but it should provide some indication of the nature of the site. Consider adding a descriptive tag at the beginning of the name to further assist Waymarking participants to locate the Waymark.

As a guideline, the following is a suggested naming scheme for listings in this category: FIRST - Solar Powered Flashlight Invented

While you are free to create your own Waymark Listing name, using the suggested style may help people when they visit multiple Waymark locations.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:

As a suggestion for your visit log, please make every effort to supply a brief-to-detailed note about your experience at the Waymark. If possible also include an image that was taken when you visited the Waymark. Images can be of yourself, a personal Waymarking signature item or just one of general interest that would be of value to others. Sharing your experience helps promote Waymarking and provides a dynamic history of your adventures.
