William Bartram (1739-1823), an American naturalist and explorer was commissioned to explore the southeastern colonies and to collect and preserve unique specimens of plants. He was to ship the plants to England along with drawings of some of the plants and animals that he discovered. Bartram Trail Historical Markers have been erected to mark important places that William Bartram visited as he traveled through eight southern states.
