Field Hospitals
Managed By: Icon Here War Hospitals
Description:
Locations and structures which temporarily served as a field hospital during wartime.
Expanded Description:
One of the effects of any war that cannot be avoided is the number of casualties. Schools, churches, and large homes often were taken over and made into field hospitals. These buildings were large enough to handle the needs of the doctors. They were usually well built and could withstand the artillery fire in the distance. They provided shelter and at least some warmth against the elements. Military leaders liked to have the field hospitals a mile or two away from the battle itself. Sometimes large buildings were not in the area where the hospital was needed. In this event, barns, caves, and even large tents had to serve the purpose.
Instructions for Posting a Field Hospitals Waymark:

1. Eligibility:
Locations to be waymarked must have served as a field or war hospital in a temporary capacity. Documentation is required. Usually this can be found on site in the form of an historical marker or interpretive. In the event none exists, a website or historical site will suffice.

2. Suggested Naming Requirement:
SITE Name - WAR Name - City, State or Country
Example: The High Street School - U.S. Civil War - Gettysburg, PA

3. Documentation:
If using evidence other than a historic marker or interpretive on location to prove the site served as a temporary field hospital during war time, indicate your source. If your source is from the internet, cite your reference and include a direct citation from that site. If your evidence is from a book, provide a direct citation from the text and include a bibliography of the book.

Text from am historic marker or interpretive on site must be included in the body of the long description.

4. Description:
At least one paragraph must be of original prose by the waymarker. A brief description of the site and location of the marker (if one exists) is required. Also to be included are the dates when the structure or location served as a field hospital. Any other documentation which can be provided would be greatly appreciated as well. Field hospitals are an important tangible link to history; 'drive by' waymarks will be immediately and unceremoniously declined.
