U.S. National Wildlife Refuges
 allows ratings
Description:
National Wildlife Refuges are relatively undisturbed ecosystems, containing nationally significant habitats for animals or plants. These areas are created and managed for the purposes of wildlife conservation, research, and interpretation. These areas are created and managed Nationally for the purposes of wildlife conservation, research, and interpretation.
Expanded Description:

Formerly U.S. National Wildlife Refuges, this category is now exemplified by the 540+ areas of the US National Wildlife Refuges. The U.S. NWR mission is to administer a national network of lands and waters for the conservation, management, and where appropriate, restoration of the fish, wildlife, and plant resources and their habitats

In Canada, similar designated areas are called National Wildlife Areas and are included in this category.

Additionally, the U.S. NOAA recognizes marine and estuary sanctuaries.

If other countries have Nationally designated refuges, sanctuaries or protection areas for wildlife, please submit a URL from a National government run web site, containing a list of those designated areas. It may be added to the list.

While National Parks may also be considered to have a similar objective of wildlife protection, we are not accepting National Parks here. Wildlife refuges are generally for day use, viewing and walking. Overnight camping is not available.

Waymarks can be points of interest, such as a road entrance, or places inside them such as hiking trails, parking areas, scenic views, picnic areas, etc.

Country Additional Information
(1)
USA
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service operates several refuges in the USA.

The US National Wildlife Refuge System administers a national network of lands and waters for the conservation, management, and where appropriate, restoration of the fish, wildlife, and plant resources and their habitats.

Some NWRs may consist of geographically separate areas, referred to as units. Each unit of an NWR may be waymarked.

We will also accept Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs). They are managed by the staff of Wetland Management Districts (WMDs). There are over 26,000 WPAs in the U.S. located mostly in the prairie pothole regions of the Dakotas, Montana, Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

All WPAs provide habitat for a vast variety of waterfowl, shorebirds, grassland birds, plants, insects and wildlife. They also help reduce erosion, clean and protect ground water and reduce flooding. WPAs owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also provide ample opportunities for public access and wildlife-dependent recreation such as hunting, wildlife watching and photography.

(2)
USA
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recognizes marine sanctuaries.

The Office of National Marine Sanctuaries serves as the trustee for a network of underwater parks encompassing more than 170,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters from Washington state to the Florida Keys, and from Lake Huron to American Samoa. The network includes a system of 13 national marine sanctuaries and Papahanaumokuakea and Rose Atoll marine national monuments.

Since these marine sanctuaries exist underwater, we will only accept a visitor center for these sanctuaries.

We will also accept National Estuaries. In the most general terms, an estuary is an ecosystem, comprising both the biological and physical environment, that has developed in a region where rivers meet the sea and fresh-flowing river water mingles with tidal salt water to become brackish, or partly salty.

The National Estuarine Research Reserve System is a network of 28 coastal sites designated to protect and study estuarine systems. Established through the Coastal Zone Management Act, the reserves represent a partnership program between NOAA and the coastal states. NOAA provides funding and national guidance, and each site is managed on a daily basis by a lead state agency or university with input from local partners.

(3)
Canada
Environment and Climate Change Canada recognizes protected wildlife habitats.

There are currently 54 National Wildlife Areas across Canada (some located in regions that include relatively undisturbed ecosystems) containing nationally significant habitats for animals or plants. Environment Canada's National Wildlife Areas protect approximately 1 million hectares of habitat with close to half of that area protecting marine habitat.

According to the Canada Wildlife Act, National Wildlife Areas are created and managed for the purposes of wildlife conservation, research, and interpretation. Environment Canada uses an ecosystem approach to manage and plan for National Wildlife Areas.

We will also accept Migratory Bird Sanctuaries (MBSs). The first Migratory Bird Sanctuaries (MBS) designated under the Migratory Birds Convention Act were the Bird Rocks and Bonaventure Island & Perce Rock sanctuaries, established in 1919, in Quebec. However, the first protected area established for the conservation of migratory birds in Canada was Last Mountain Lake in 1887, in southern Saskatchewan, a refuge for birds that later became a Migratory Bird Sanctuary (in 1921) as well as a National Wildlife Area (in 1994).

At present, there are 92 MBSs across Canada, comprising almost 11.5 million hectares of migratory bird habitat that provides safe refuge for migratory birds in the terrestrial and marine environment. The Canadian Wildlife Service of Environment Canada is the agency responsible for MBS, although the sanctuaries can be located on federal, provincial or private land.

Instructions for Posting a U.S. National Wildlife Refuges Waymark:
The waymark coordinates MUST be located in a Nationally recognized refuge / sanctuary. Markers outside of a National Wildlife Refuge boundaries will not be accepted.

or
"Beautiful NWR - State, Country"

If an NWR is located near a city, the City may be included with the state to clarify the location.

1. Provide accurate coordinates for the point within the NWR.

2. Provide two photos, that you've taken, at or near the posted waymark coordinates. A photo of a sign showing the NWR name is desired, if present.

LIMIT: No more than two waymarks per waymarker per NWR, and those should be 0.5 miles from any other waymarks in the NWR.
Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Include at least one photo of the area at or near the posted waymark coordinates with your visit log.
