William Clark was here
On November 19th, 1805, William Clark and 18 men visited this site. This was the end of his epic voyage and the end of the Lewis and Clark Trail. His journal records that he carved his initials and date on a tree before returning to the base camp in Ilwaco. To commemorate this event, the City of Long Beach commissioned a 20-foot bronze statue of this windswept tree to be installed at the edge of the beach in front of the Breakers.
