The Carl's Jr. Story
Los Angeles, 1941. Young Carl N. Karcher and his wife, Margaret, make a leap of faith and borrow $311 on their Plymouth automobile, add $15 in savings and purchase a hot dog cart. The stand initially sold hot dogs and Mexican tamales. One cart grows to four, and in less than five years, Carl's Drive-In Barbecue opens in Fullerton, CA with hamburgers on the menu. The brand continues its growth with an emphasis on quality, service and cleanliness, pioneering concepts such as partial table service and self-serve beverage bars. The introduction of the signature Six Dollar Burger™ in 2001 marks the latest Carl's Jr.® advance in the quick-service industry, confirming the chain's constant emphasis on product innovation and representing a desire to satisfy the tastes of young, hungry consumers. On his first day in the fast-food business, Carl N. Karcher took in $14.75. More than 60 years and 1,000 restaurants later, Carl's Jr.® has become known as the place to go all across the West for juicy, delicious charbroiled burgers.

The Hardee's Story
Wilber Hardee opened his first namesake restaurant in Greenville, North Carolina in 1960. Five months later he had his first franchisee and over the years his burger chain has spread to become a favorite throughout the Midwestern and Southeastern United States. Although most folks knew Hardee's® for its biscuits, all that changed during the Revolution of 2003: Hardee's® decided to pare down its menu and focus on the hearty 1/3-, 1/2- and 2/3-pound Thickburger® line. Made with 100% Angus beef, Thickburgers® established Hardee's® as a leader in the quick-service industry in both quality and taste. Today, Hardee's® forges ahead with a taste for edgy, memorable ads and delicious food-creating a fast-food experience that can't be topped this side of the Mississippi.

Timeline
1960s - Hardee's gains immediate popularity and the chain grows rapidly. By the end of the decade, there are nearly 200 Hardee's® restaurants, including an international location in Heidelberg, Germany.
1960s - Carl's Jr.® begins its commitment to a quality dining experience by becoming the first among quick-service restaurants to offer table service and plush, carpeted dining rooms with music.
1970s - Hardee's introduces fresh, Made from Scratch™ biscuits that soon become a hallmark of the brand and remain an immensely popular menu favorite even today.
1980s - Hardee's acquires the 650-unit Burger Chef chain and later opens its 2,000th restaurant.
1990s - Carl's Jr. begins dual-branding restaurants with quick-service Mexican food favorite Green Burrito®. The choice gives patrons twice as many reasons to eat out.
1990s - CKE Restaurants, Inc., a California-based restaurant company best known for its Hardee's® subsidiary, acquires the Hardee's® chain from Canadian company Imasco.
