Description:: This category seeks to find bridge date stones bronze tablets which permanently recorded the date a bridge was constructed or dedicated.

Expanded Description:

Sometimes when bridges are built, especially those of the early 20th century, date markers were embedded or installed in the bridge for posterity, not only listing the construction or dedication date but those responsible for the building of the bridge.

Many of those markers are of stone and are eroded and worn with time. Still others have suffered at the hands of the vandal or savage. Others have simply vanished. This category seeks to electronically preserve these unique date markers.

Instructions for Posting a Bridge Date Stones and Plaques Waymark:

Acceptable waymarks for this category would include:

1. Stones & Plaques: Permanently embedded date stones built into the bridge or a permanent plaque or marker, usually bronze, attached to the bridge.

2. Originality: The bridge date stone has to be original, thus the historical nature of the category. It also has to be the year the bridge was built. If it is not the year the bridge was built, your submission will be denied unless you have a very good argument. We are not looking for signs of history or historical markers added later with a date or new or old metal signs bearing dates.

3. Marker Text: The text of the marker must be included in the long description.

4. Two Photos: A framed "art shot" of the date stone or tablet must be the default photo. A second photo of the bridge itself must also be included. Failure to do so will result in the waymark being denied.

5. History: Please include as much information as you can find out about the bridge.

6. Naming Convention: Bridge Name - Date - City/State or Country ~ Please adhere to the capitalization of proper nouns, not all capitals for every word. Use dashes not commas. Here is an example:

7. Location: Please write a sentence or more if necessary to explain exactly where on the bridge the date is located. Some of these are hard to locate. Direction is appreciated.

** Failure to comply with the naming convention will result in your waymark being unceremoniously denied. **

Exclusions:

Freestanding monuments away from the bridge itself are not to be included in this category. The date stone or plaque should be worked into the fabric of the bridge. Displaced date stones are not accepted here. Metal markers with lettering stuck on as an afterthought are not for this category.
