Description:
Locations related to the life, travels and memory of William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, legendary hero and showman of the American West.
Expanded Description:
William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody - February 26, 1846 to January 10, 1917.

Showman - Scout - Visionary: These words best describe William “Buffalo Bill” Cody. Growing up in the wilds of the American West, Cody experienced an exciting life that most of us could only dream about. Courier for stage companies and military posts, Civil War soldier, gold prospector, civilian Army scout, and buffalo hunter ... these are just a few of the professions Cody experienced before he reached the age of 21.

Cody found himself in the unique position of having more personal knowledge of the American West than most people of his era. Realizing that people in other parts of the country, and across the ocean in Europe, were thirsting for this information, Cody created a persona of one of America's greatest showmen. Building upon his reputation as a dynamic and entertaining individual, Cody developed Buffalo Bill’s Wild West, a traveling exhibition that visited all points of the continental US, parts of Canada, and the majority of Europe.

Buffalo Bill’s Wild West helped perpetuate the facts, as well as the myth, of the American West. Today his name remains as a symbol of the West and the spirit that drives us all to seek an ever-beckoning adventure. Museums, monuments, statues, and even businesses have all been created or named in his honor. Sites of his performances are often marked, and pilgrimages are made by historians wanting to pay tribute and learn more about one of America’s greatest legends.

DID BUFFALO BILL VISIT YOUR TOWN? The Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave, www.buffalobill.org, has just posted a comprehensive list of the location and dates of every single Buffalo Bill performance. OVER 1400 cities and countless performance sites, all waiting to be scouted and waymarked. The Museum will provide FREE jpg images from their collection to help substantiate any site.
Instructions for Posting a William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody Waymark:
To be accepted, the waymark must meet the following criteria: You must provide coordinates taken at the location. You must provide one or more quality pictures of the location or the object. Neither you nor your GPS need to be in the picture, although images of you interacting with landmarks as appropriate are acceptable. No pictures taken with cell phone cameras, please. In the event that no photographs are allowed of an image (i.e. inside of a museum), a verbal description of an item or location is acceptable. The location or object must be directly related to Buffalo Bill either as an historic site or an homage to his memory. Contact the Category Manager (Pahaska_1) if assistance is needed in verifying details or acquiring dates.

Examples of acceptable waymarks: Museums and memorials; specific locations where Cody is known to have lived, performed, or conducted business; gravesites of Cody and his extended family; businesses or sites named in honor of Cody.

Note: if your waymark location is only open or accessible at certain times or on private property, or if an admission fee is required, please include this information in the "Location Notes" field.

Examples of unacceptable waymarks: Private property without owner’s knowledge; anything using the term "Buffalo Bill" or "Cody" that can not be traced to Cody, himself (i.e., the Buffalo Bill's football franchise); street signs.
Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Proof of your visit does not require a photograph if an identical image is already posted. Many sites, however, will offer fun photo-opportunities for waymarkers to showcase their creativity. Therefore, waymarkers should post unique images of themselves interacting with exhibits and activities.

In the event that photographs are not allowed at specific locations, please tell us about your visit and what you enjoyed or learned at the location.
