German-American Heritage Sites
Description:
This category documents buildings, monuments, statues, markers, and other evidence of Germanic heritage in the United States.
Expanded Description:
German-speaking immigrants came to the American colonies and later to the United States in huge numbers, and even today nearly a quarter of all U.S. citizens claim German ancestry. The greatest concentration of German settlement was in the “German Belt,” stretching from Pennsylvania across the Midwest and Great Plains to mountain states like Colorado and Montana. But there were also many German communities in the Carolinas, Texas, California, and all points in between. As a result, there are literally thousands of historical and cultural sites throughout the United States that bear witness to this German-American heritage.

Waymarks in this category could include historic buildings that served the German population, monuments and markers that highlight German culture, statues and memorials to prominent German-Americans, contemporary German-American businesses and institutions, or other significant remnants of the German presence in the United States. "German" in this context refers to all historical German-speaking territories, including Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
