Description:
[EN] Monument historique is a State procedure in France by which heritage protection is extended to a building or a specific part of a building, a collection of buildings or an entire neighborhood, or gardens, bridges, and other structures, because of their architectural and historical importance.

Expanded Description:
[EN] The designation traces its roots to the French Revolution when the government appointed Alexandre Lenoir to specify and safeguard certain structures. The first classifications were given in the 19th century by the writer Prosper Mérimée, inspector-general of historical monuments. Classification of a site can usually be determined by the presence of the plaque pictured here. In addition, all monuments qualifying for this category are listed in the Merimee data base maintained by the French Ministry of Culture. Click here to access the database. Then click on "Acces Geographique". Then click on "Liste alphabetique des communes de France". (If this doesn't bring you to the database it's because the webmaster has changed something. In this case please send the group leader an email to indicate that the access doesn't work any longer).

The Merimee database is inconsistent in the information it stores on each monument. For this reason none of the variables are required, however the "localisation" variable is easy to fill in as it is the commune under which the monument is classified. Just fill in the variables which you actually find in the Merimee database.

Instructions for Posting a Monuments Historiques Français Waymark:
[EN]

The site must be located on French territory which includes all overseas departments and territories.

Determine whether it is an officially classified site by the presence of the Monument Historique logo OR by its entry in the Merimee data base. Click here to access the database. Then click on "Acces Geographique". Then click on "Liste alphabetique des communes de France".

A photo taken by you clearly showing the site must be uploaded and displayed on the waymark page.

If the logo is visible, also take a photo of the logo with some recognizable part of the site included as proof that the site meets the category requirements. OTHERWISE, indicate the Merimee DB information as an alternative way to prove that the site meets the category requirements.

NOTE : The Merimee database is inconsistent in the information it stores on each monument. For this reason none of the variables are required, however the commune variable is easy to fill in as it is the commune under which the monument is classified. Just fill in the variables which you actually find in the Merimee database.
