Illinois historic markers are our windows to the past. They educate us, they make us curious to investigate, or they provide a nice excuse to take a break and stretch our legs while we read what happened here.

Expanded Description:

This category can include any marker, sign, plaque etc... that has been placed by any state, county or local historical society as long as it is in the state of Illinois.

Instructions for Posting a Illinois Historical Markers Waymark:

To list a new marker please include the following:

  • Picture of the marker so the text legible.
  • Coordinates (of course)
  • The County where the marker is placed.
  • The city or town
  • A detailed description of the site. For example: What happened there? Text from the marker is great or use your own words to describe the location.
  • Optional: Include a related website, who and when it was dedicated.
  • Optional, but encouraged:Picture of the area around the marker.

Stephen Douglas moved to Winchester when he was 20 years old in 1833 to teach school. He had forty students who paid him $3 each per quarter. Douglas taught himself the law after school and soon left Winchester to work as a lawyer.
