Zippy the Pinhead Locations
Description:
The purpose of this category is to locate and waymark specific locations featured in Zippy the Pinhead Comics.

Expanded Description:

Bill Griffith is the creator and artist of Zippy the Pinhead. Week after week Zippy visits interesting locations worldwide.

In his daily-strip incarnation, Zippy spends much of his time traveling and commenting on interesting places; recent strips focus on his fascination with roadside icons featuring giant beings; Zippy also frequently participates in his long-running conversation with the giant fiberglass doggie mascot of San Francisco's "Doggie Diner" chain (later, the Carousel diner near the San Francisco Zoo). The website encourages people to send photos of interesting places for Zippy to visit in the strip. Source and additional information: Wikipedia

Zippy is the source for the catch phrase "Are we Having Fun Yet?". A complete history of Zippy the Pinhead can be read in this transcription of an interview Is he having fun yet? given by Bill Griffith in 1995.

Location Search Resources:

Links to locations in the United States

Links to locations outside of the United States

The Roadside Tour gives direct and easy links to many of Zippy's location based comics.

The most comprehensive resources are the ones that have the strip listed by date and location. The easiest is to click the Where's Zippy button on any archived comics page. This will produce a popup window with a list of locations for a given year. Options for other years can be found on this popup page as well. Another list also has the locations available for research and is the most recently updated at this time. Real Places in Daily Strips

Another limited but easy to use resource is the Roadside Tour Zippy Archive that has a clickable United States Map. This page also has a drop down box that includes links to some strips that have locations outside of the states including, Canada, England, France, Ireland, Japan, Puerto Rico, and even South Korea. The dropdown list does not include all out of the US locations that can be waymarked. For example this strip's location of Kaohsiung, Taiwan must be searched for in the comprehensive list above.

Some comics have more than one location featured. This example titled "Missing Link" features three locations. The locations include, Jekyll Island Miniature Golf, Jekyll Island GA, Putt-Putt Golf Course, Drayton Plains MI and Goofy Golf, Panama City Beach FL. Each location would be waymarkable in the category.

I don't get Zippy! Go here and learn how to read Zippy in "six easy lessons".

The Zippy the Pinhead illustration used on this page falls under fair use copyright guidelines. The use of low-resolution images of this illustration for/from a comic strip to illustrate the copyrighted character(s) or group(s) depicted on the excerpted panel in question where no free alternative exists or can be created constitutes Fair Use under US copyright law.

Instructions for Posting a Zippy the Pinhead Locations Waymark:

NOTE: Generic references to a city or location in a strip's text are not acceptable as a waymark location.
If a location is featured in more than one strip it is eligible for more than one waymark.
Each unique strip may be featured as an individual waymark.
If a strip has more than one location featured the strip can be waymarked for both locations.

1) Personally obtain coordinates: Obtained from your on site visit to the location.

2) Naming your waymark: LOCATION - STRIP NAME - CITY, STATE/COUNTRY
If your strip is one of the Sunday Strips that does not carry a strip name use the words "Sunday Strip" instead of the location name. Some strips not identified in one place are named in the archives. Be prepared to add a name to your listing if requested.

3) Provide a photo: The photo should be one you have taken personally at a location featured in a Zippy The Pinhead comic.

4) Include some information about the feature: Share some history if possible. Drop some links into the long description if there are available web sites that have additional information. If an easy Google search will turn up additional information expect your waymark to be returned for updating before being published.

5) Include in the variables the date, name of the strip and location featured:
For example:

Date: 06/08/06
Strip Name: Minority Report
Location: Portland Oregon

6) Provide a link to the comic itself: (Minority Report)
Zippy the Pinhead is subject to copyright laws. Do not place examples of the strip in the waymark but a link to the strip location you are waymarking is required for posting. Please include this link in the variable provided for it.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:
Please provide additional photos of the location. Add your own Zippyisms, if you would like, to your visit log.
Category Settings:
  • Waymarks can be added to this category
  • New waymarks of this category are reviewed by the category group prior to being published
  • Category is visible in the directory
Variables:
  • Date the strip ran
  • Strip Name
  • Location of item featured in the strip
