Description:
Each spring adult female turtles around the world embark on a deadly journey key for the survival of their species. This journey takes them from their relatively safe aquatic and wetland habitats and sends them straight through a gauntlet of life threatening situations on their way to their final destination. By helping a turtle across the road and documenting here, you can show the world that you are doing your part to save the environment.
Expanded Description:
Watch out for mother turtles crossing the road during the summer when they seek higher ground to lay their eggs. Please avoid hitting them and if possible, you might want to help the turtle cross the road. But remember to always move turtles in the direction they are headed. If they are moved back to the side from which they were crossing, they will just try to cross the road again in the same place. And do not forget to come back again next year and see if you can watch this happen again. Miracle of miracle the the turtles will cross back over the same route to return to the water each and every year at the same time of year.. Once the eggs hatch be on the watch out for babies crossing the road headed for the water, along the vary same path that the mother took. "Mother Blanding had made her nest between the goldenrod and bluestem outside my office window late last June. By chance we were sitting on the porch when we noticed little blandings in the same location we had seen the mother take 2 months earlier."

Each spring adult female turtles around the world embark on this deadly journey key for the survival of their species. This journey takes them from their relatively safe aquatic and wetland habitats and sends them straight through a gauntlet of life threatening situations on their way to their final destination. As with many animals, spring is the season many turtles reproduce; each spring disrespectful drivers needlessly kill countless egg-laying turtles by running them over as the turtles are making their journey to their egg-laying site in upland fields. Not only are they killing the adult female turtle, that might be well over 40 years old, but they are also killing the next generation of turtles before they even have a chance.

By now, you may be asking yourself; What can I do? Well the answer is simple.

Since the activity of Waymarking and Geocaching involves quite a lot of traveling, so on your travels, keep your eyes open for our female turtle friends and help them across the road. As you approach a turtle take note in the direction they are traveling so that you help them to the right side of the road.

To log a Turtle that you helped across the road, add a turtle crossing waymark with a picture of you helping the turtle cross the road along with the coordinates and state/country where you helped a turtle cross the road. Please be careful, some turtles, such as the well-known snapping turtle, can inflict serious injury if not handled correctly. By picking them up by their shell you can safely move most turtles. For snapping turtles, quickly walk up behind them and firmly grab their tail and slowly and carefully drag them on the ground.
