A Brief Biography (compared to some)
Dr. King's Achievements and Global Impact

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia as Michael Luther King, Jr. His Reverend father renamed him Martin when he was five years old, after the Lutheranism leader. An advanced student, King began college at age 15 and earned BA in Sociology, as well as a Bachelor of Divinity, and a Doctorate of Philosophy. In addition to the degrees he earned through study, Dr. King had been given numerous honorary degrees throughout his career.

Dr. King's work began early as a Baptist minister. The inspiration of Howard Thurman, Gandhi, and Bayard Rustin helped define Dr. King's path and purpose in the civil rights movements. Dr. King was a prolific writer and speaker, delivering many poignant and inspiring messages, including "Letter from Birmingham Jail" which Dr. King wrote in 1963, and "I Have a Dream" which was delivered in front of the Lincoln Memorial at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963.

As a civil rights leader, Dr. King helped form the Southern Christian Leadership Conference [SCLC], which spearheaded activism against segregation and race inequality through civil disobedience and non-violent protest. Dr. King's work led to the enforcement of race equality laws and banning of racial segregation, or Jim Crow laws. Dr. King escaped death on several occassions and faced more death threats than can ever be counted from violent segregationists. In 1963, Attorney General Robert Kennedy ordered the FBI to wire tap King, using the material as an attempt to force him out of his respected leadership. In addition to government interference, not all non-violent protests were met with a non-violent response. Tragic events like Bloody Sunday (1965) and the attempts of the SCLC in Chicago (1966) have become historic demonstrations of hateful resistence against change and equality. As a Baptist minister, Dr. King also spoke against the Vietnam War and poverty from a religious perspective.

Dr. King was the youngest person to receive a Nobel Peace Prize (1964) and was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1977) and, with his wife, was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal (2004). Jamaica also posthumously awarded Dr. King with the Marcus Garvey Prize for Human Rights in 1968. Both The Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America have venerated Dr. King as a Saint.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated at 6:01pm on April 4, 1968 in Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. The Lorraine Motel is now a Civil Rights museum. Even Dr. King's death was not without conspiracy. James Earl Ray was arrested and convicted of Dr. King's assassination, but claims of conspiracy surfaced and questioned Ray's verdict and role in the assassination. The U.S. Department of Justice reported no evidence of conspiracy after their investigation in 2000, but several names and motives are still discussed in connection with Dr. King's assassination.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s influence and impact is known and honored globally. His human rights activism in the civil rights movement had a resounding effect that has continued to forge and inspire change throughout the world.
