Elizabeth Chadd, John's wife, stayed in the house during the Battle of Brandywine. John had died years before. She hid her sliver spoons in her apron everyday so they wouldn't get stolen!

Judge Joseph F. Battle held court here twice a year so the Colonial courthouse could hold it's title as the oldest public building in continuous use in the US.
