Master Architects - Deconstructivism
Description:
Deconstructivism is an architectural movement that broke through the restraints of the traditional building "envelope" resulting in structures that sometimes seems more sculpture than architecture. Several architects emerged as leaders in the style and in this category we will waymark the work of those architects considered masters of the style. They are Peter Eisenman, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Coop Himmelblau, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, and Bernard Tschumi.
Expanded Description:
Deconstructivism is characterized by fragmentation and non-rectilinear shapes which distort the common elements of architecture. The finished visual appearance of buildings that exhibit the many deconstructivist "styles" is characterised by unpredictability and a controlled chaos. Philip Johnson describes this architectural movement as “the symbolic breakdown of the wall.”

In 1988 the Museum of Modern Art had an exhibition of deconstructivist architecture. This exhibit is considered to have crystallized the movement and it brought fame and reknown to the architects chosen as masters of the style. The architects featured were Peter Eisenman, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Coop Himmelblau, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, and Bernard Tschumi.

Many of these architects have distanced themselves from the term “deconstructivism” since the exhibition. However, history has recorded them as masters of this style, a style that has become the current trend of contemporary architecture.

The goal of this category is to waymark buildings and other structures designed by the architects Peter Eisenman, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Coop Himmelblau, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, and Bernard Tschumi.
